Drama films are films that are presented in more serious and exaggerated ways. These films usually contain stories that portray realistic characters dealing with different conflicts. Dramatic films often include themes such as current issues, racial topics, political arguments, drug addiction, poverty, sexual inequality, alcoholism, and other serious topics. The drama film genre is one of the largest genres, as many genres that exist today are derived from the drama genre.
3. Genre Conventions- production techniques
In order to create successful drama movies, there are specific production techniques that are used. When it comes to music, dramas tend to include music that really creates an emotional response. Depending on the type of drama, some of the other production techniques include dim and dramatic low lighting, intimate close-up shots, and intense soundtracks.
4. Film Sample #1
Titanic- This movie, directed by James Cameron, is a perfect example of a drama. This movie shares the story of the tragic sinking of the Titanic in 1912. This movie is both dramatic and emotional and includes an intense soundtrack. This movie also includes scenes that will make you cry till you have no tears left. This movie also addresses issues such as poverty and helplessness which are common in many drama films.
5. Film Sample #2
12 Angry Men- Directed by Sindey Lumet, 12 Angry Men is another example of a drama film. This film tells the story of a jury that is trying to come to a decision about a court case. Although this film doesn't really have a soundtrack, the dialogue that takes place in this film is dramatic. There is a lot of yelling and fighting as well as a lot of zoom and close up shots to add to the drama.
